Builders are adapting to rising land, labor, and material costs by designing smaller homes, striving to keep prices somewhat within reach, even as mortgage rates hover in the 6% to 7% range. For first-time and budget-focused buyers, these smaller homes could make things like down payments and monthly payments a bit more manageable\u2014even if the cost per square foot remains high.
